Confession of a Reformed Botter

Posted in MMORPG with tags , , , on May 21, 2014 by theerivs

hot girl 6As I go into the confessional, I say, “forgive me father I have sinned it’s been..well a long time since my last confession. I lusted, stole, and one more thing I can’t mention.

The priest replies, “All sins are forgiven her my son”

I gulp, and say, “I use to bot in Warcraft”

The priest goes, “Get out, your excommunicated you piece of shit”

Yes I use to be a botter. I started back in the tail end of Burning Crusade, I was bored and a ton of my friends, who were also my coworkers, and guildies were doing it. I use to sit there at work while they check on their toons working away unattended and I admit I was amazed. The program they all used was Glider. At first I dabbled, cause I was scared I would lose my account. Then I got a second account to do all my gliding with. I would set it up and it would go to work at the beginning of the day, I would get home and be loaded down with stuff, and gold, or honor depending on what I wanted to do.

Was it cheating sure was, but the fact alot of my friends were doing it made it seem a little bit ok. I was enthralled at the toon sitting there pathing, and doing it’s thing Glider was a pretty nifty program. The community they had was pretty good bunch of guys too.

Well fallout came when Blizzard put the clamps on Glider, and to my surprise my main account took the hit and was banned, while my second account still was intact and which I still use today, and two of my toons were glided to 70 lol

I do miss my first account with my first toon I ever played with, and the mage I raided MC, and BWL with and that was the price I paid for botting. I never dabbled again because I left that job, and my coworkers and I seldom played since. I don’t even buy gold cause I don’t see the point, if your smart you can make all you need and more.

It was an interesting experience, and I don’t regret it but when I see a bot (and I can tell which toons are) I just shake my head, and go they’ll get you to one day.

I, Robot

So a member of my guild was booted because he was using an AFK bot to stay in WF’s in RIFT. Now I wholeheartedly agree with the guild decision. It’s unfair to people in the WF that your taking up space instead of doing your job. I think PvP bots should go to hell really.

But here’s my philosophy though Farming Bots, Chinese Farmers, Gold Buying/Selling. Really I don’t have a problem with. Why?

My Opinion.

I believe that these people actually keep prices down on the AH. For example when a popular botting program called Glider was taken off the market, the prices for farmed stuff went up. Why? Supply and Demand. With the Farmers there was alot of Supply, that out met the demand, thus better prices. Take that away, no supply more demand.

But it’s cheating?

Well yes and no. If you have someone or bot grinding out mobs for 8 hours a time, it’s doing the same thing you can do….if you had 8 hours to spare, and could stand grinding that long with out poking your own eyes out.

Where I draw the line?

PvP bots I do draw the line at. We are there to compete. Say we are playing football, if a member of my football team just stood there AFK I would be pissed.

What about Hacking?

Hacking is the insidious by-product of all this. Now I got hacked years ago, and it took a week and a half to be restored. Now WoW got it down to days.  There are steps to improve this now with authenticator.

The Truth of the Matter –

I’m fascinated a little bit about bots, and how they work as a computer scientist, I have a curiosity about them.

What are your Thoughts on Botting?

For the record, I support hackers.

Little over melodramatic title, but it’s true. This post had me thinking, its great post and really well thought out….but I don’t agree with it.  I really don’t care about all these ne’er-do-well activities.  As it was once said, “For evil to flourish all it takes is for good men to do nothing”  Ok let me get further to the meat of my argument.

Back in 2006, I was hacked. I was sick, my toons were deleted. I had to go through a whole rigmarole to get my toon back. It made me learn one important thing, this is a game, these are just pixels. True some pixels we invest ALOT of our time into, just still pixels though. Sure it sucked, don’t get me wrong, but in this life there is alot more important things.

Ok I never bought gold, but I don’t mind them. If you buy gold, that’s on you, cause it is very stupid there’s ALOT of ways to make gold in this game.  Hell all the dumdum people out there keep me well stocked in gold. Sure I was tempted, but I think outside the box, like for my very first mount I sold rabbits to hordelings, one of the first people to do that. Sure it’s an old concept now, but there’s still money making ways that will net you alot of gold. They say buying gold is cheating, against who? WoW is mostly a PvE game, I’m sure Arthas is pissed you bought gold to make that epic item. There are tons of blogs out there that give you tips on how to make gold.

Of Chinese Farmer, and Botters….since I go outside the box most of my wares are not in competition to farmers/botters. I don’t care though when I want titanium, I don’t want to pay outrageous prices for it. Why is saronite 15g a stack of ore, and not 60 gold. It’s cause of farmers. Is it unfair to those ‘normal’ players who want to sell their ore. Sure is, and so is Walmart. All is fair in love and war, and make no mistake…business is war.  I remember when a program called glider, a popular botting program shut down, prices skyrocketed…scew that!!!

Look in a perfect world I wish there were no hackers, no thieves, no crime. I also wish I lived on lollipop lane, in a giant gumdrop. It ain’t going to happen. Hackers are out there, you might be hacked if you aren’t careful. Hackers are really scumbags, but this is great because it keeps Blizzard on their toes. The process has improved 100 times to restore your stuff, with the speed, and quickness in the way they respond. So I support anything that makes this game better, and anything that makes you better. I feel when you get hacked, you learn something about yourself, and the security of your little world, whither it be you WoW account, or real life.

I don’t know how to fix all this, maybe if  Blizzard just sold gold themselves at a reasonable price.  I don’t know, until then I’ll make sure I got a secure password, and good malware protection on my computer.

**UPDATE…someone just pointed this out to me. I never seen the biggest pile of poop ever.  I lost all respect for wow.com.

The Darkside of WoW

If Goldfarmers looked like Zhang Ziyi, I would buy them all out.

Aion was overrun by bots, and I thought back to my old days of PvP where there were at least 2-3 jump bots in AV. sitting there jumping every 3 seconds in the cave. The reason I ask, I was on my bank alt. Yea it’s a naked female. Cause I don’t like clothed girls handling my money, they might sneak some in there purse. 🙂 Anywho a chinese person started spewing Chinese at me. Ok I took a semester of Chinese in college, so I knew how to say Hi, and your butt looks very nice today, or how are you. I get the two confused.  So it got me thinking.  Is there still a bot problem in WoW? Any run in’s with botters?

In my hey day they use to be everywhere, goldfarmers, bots, and people who would try to hack your account.  I hate people that hack accounts to me they are the utmost scum that should rot on the 3rd layer of hell, but to be truthfully honest, I don’t mind the goldfarmers, and the bots. Actually I like them, they keep the prices down on the AH. To me goldfarmer, and bots do the same thing I would do ifI needed gold…farm it.  Some Goldfarmers provide a service, which I don’t mind either. If you want to buy gold, go right ahead.

I guess the problem lies int he fact, that these goldfarmers, and bots support the account hackers. Is there enough of a hacking problem to make Blizzard demand you get an Authenticator. If Blizzard forced you would you get an Authenticator?  Tell you the truth I don’t know that I would continue to use WoW if the forced me to do anything, I don’t like authority figures.
